My Aged Care Clinic

Amanda from Prestige InHome Care held a My Aged Care clinic at the Astra for residents to attend, to ask questions and to understand more about the system. It was a great turnout, and we learned a lot. My Aged Care is a complicated system, involving different tiers of care provision and many types of care from cleaning to shopping to round the clock care. Even though we are an independent living village, many of our residents get the benefits of some form of care. Amanda’s company provides assistance to people who are wanting to access different care packages. She explained the differences between the packages, and how to apply for each type. She explained the benefits and drawbacks of the My Aged Care system. It was an extremely informative session, and lots of people asked questions. Amanda had provided a lovely gluten-free mandarin cake for morning tea after, so we had a cuppa and a chat with cake while mulling over what we had heard. Thanks to Amanda for coming out to us, and thanks to everyone who came to find out more.

Seniors Fitness Balance Exercise Class

Paloma from Seniors Fitness in Bondi Junction came to give us a balance and falls prevention class. We worked our bodies all over, initially using resistance bands to build up strength in our muscles. We finished the session balancing in different ways – feet apart, feet together, feet one in front of the other. Wobbling was our friend! We learned that if you don’t wobble, you’re not testing yourself enough – wobbling means you are using those balancing skills to their max. Thanks to Paloma for a great class, and to everyone who came. It was a really good session that everyone found useful.

Rageism Beauty Workshop

We were excited to finally welcome Kathrine from Rageism Beauty to the Astra, after having had three unfortunate circumstances in the last two months that meant we had had to reschedule. It was worth the wait though! Kathrine was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and we were interested to hear the beauty tips that she gave us throughout the session. Darryl put her hand up to be our helper and get made up, and Kathrine talked us through each stage of the process. Because there weren't too many of us we were able to get one-on-one advice, and those of us that were there had a lot of fun and were really engaged the whole time. We were all thrilled with how natural and lovely Darryl's makeover was, and how we had all learnt something by being there. Hopefully, if there is more interest later in the year, we can get Kathrine back to give us some spring beauty tips...

Goodbye Paul, Welcome Flora!

We were sad to say goodbye to Paul, our fearless manager of the last few years, as he moved to take up a new job closer to home. Many thanks go to him for all that he has done for Astra residents in his time here, and we had a morning tea to see him off and wish him all the best before he left. The residents enjoyed chatting with him, having a cuppa, and meeting our new manager, Flora. A huge welcome to Flora! She has come to us from a background in property management and is excited to get stuck into the retirement village life. Please say hi to her if you see her around the Village and if you have a funny story to tell, she’d love to hear it!

Cleo's Author Talk - In Search of Bertha

Thanks to resident Cleo for agreeing to give an author talk about her book 'In Search of Bertha'. We are very lucky to have so many accomplished and creative people at the Astra! Cleo gave a really interesting and informative talk about her search to ‘find’ a member of her family. She was inspired to do it because some years ago, after a brush with her own mortality, she realised that the family knew little about her grandmother Bertha. It was a fascinating trip into the past, complete with photographs, and we learned something about outback Queensland and the early wool industry. We finished up with afternoon tea and cake, and an opportunity to chat further about the talk.

Brain Health Presentation

Shannon Chin, from Fit Minds Australia, came to the Astra to talk to us about Brain Health. She spoke about the 8 pillars that support healthy brain function, how to age well, and how to reduce our risk of developing dementia.

She gave practical tips on how to keep our brains healthy. These are a couple of simple, effective tricks that we could all do:

  • Pick five random words from a book and write them down, then come back after about an hour and see if you can remember the words. When you are finding this too easy, you can increase the amount of time between writing and remembering and increase the number of words.

  • When you are in the supermarket, try to add up your shopping item by item, and then see how close you are when you pay at the tills.

Shannon also spoke about the benefits of diet and exercise, as well as other activities you can do regularly to keep your brain healthy. Sudokus, crosswords, jigsaws, games and learning new languages were just some of the things she suggested. The important thing is to keep your mind active with regular training, and to do different things to make sure it doesn't just get stuck in familiar patterns. It was a really excellent and interesting talk, with those that came saying how much they appreciated it.

Balance and Falls Prevention Talk

The notice told us here at the Astra that a balance and falls prevention workshop would be conducted and it was well attended. The workshop was facilitated by Amanda Keogh of Prestige Home Care, an organisation that specialises in services for, and education of, the mature-aged population. Emily Moore, from Seniors Fitness (at Bondi Junction) presented information and statistics, based on science and research. And some of the statistics were alarming, ranging from serious injury and incapacitation to fatalities caused by a fall. It is a hidden danger that stalks us all.

Emily asked us to complete rudimentary individual tool to assess our level of danger from falling. Surprising it was to realise that various forms of medication increased this liability. We then participated in a number of exercises designed to improve our balance. However, we were also instructed not to attempt these exercises away from means of support in case we should overbalance.

For myself, as I walk the unreliable Bondi footpaths, I always consider myself at risk from a fall. And sadly, as we now know, that Caroline Jones, an enduring Australian icon of television and journalism, died last week as the result from a fall in her home. She was only 84 – the age I will be this year.

Thank you to Bondi Beach Astra for organising this instructive workshop.

Musical Afternoon Tea with Cassy and Carl

We were so excited to welcome Cassy and Carl to our musical afternoon tea last month. Cassy had to find someone to replace her pianist at the last minute, and we were so lucky that she was able to get Carl to come and play guitar for us. We had a wonderful hour of lovely singing, amazing guitar playing, and reminiscing over the classics. Our guests took requests from their audience, much to our delight. Accompanying the music we had bubbly, soft drinks and tea and coffee, as well as a wide range of snacks and nibbles. Those who came down for this event really enjoyed it, and once again said how much they love live music at the Astra. More to come throughout the year...

Zumba

Wow what a morning! We welcomed Katrin (Kate) to the Astra to lead us in our first ever Zumba class. The music was pumping, our bodies were moving and there were smiles on all our faces as Kate led us in our dance moves. We did fast energetic routines, and when we needed a break we did slow gentle ones. Through it all Kate was encouraging and had such great positive energy. Those of us who could joined in for every dance, and those of us who couldn’t sat out a few – but everyone had a great time. We might all need a few weeks to recover now, but hopefully we will do it again soon! Fun, dancing, music and a beautiful teacher to keep us all motivated was a fabulous recipe for success. Thanks to everyone who came, and let’s keep moving…

St Patrick's Day Lunch

We couldn’t have St Patrick’s Day without a celebration, so we came together in our best green outfits on 17th for a delicious ploughman’s lunch. There were cold meats and salads, pickles and chutneys, cheeses and eggs, and Anna’s (by now) famous soda bread! The lounge was decorated with shamrocks and flags and as much green as we could fit into the space! We had Guinness and cider on offer, alongside a range of soft drinks. The atmosphere was vibrant and it was clear that the residents had been looking forward to it. A lovely day with lovely people and lovely food – can’t get any better than that!

Sandwich Afternoon Tea

Who doesn’t like a good sandwich??! And good sandwiches were what we had at afternoon tea this month. Thanks to resident Darryl for organising this fabulous food – what a star! Lovely to catch up with friends over a cuppa, and we make the most of every opportunity to do so at the Astra! What a place to be 😊

Get Wild Wildlife Presentation

We had a wonderfully wild afternoon at the Astra with company Get Wild bringing in some local animals and giving us a fascinating wildlife presentation. We met Bubblegum the Blue Tongued Lizard, Freddo the Green Tree Frog, Angelica the Spotted Python, Lillian the Saltwater Crocodile, Squawk the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo and so many more that I can’t remember all their names! Our keeper for the afternoon introduced us to each of them and told us about their species… then she brought them round for us to touch or say hello to. The lizards ranged from smooth, to scaly, to fringed, with different defense mechanisms. The snakes were silky smooth and docile. Despite Angelica’s size she was happy just lying on the carpet, and her skin gave off an iridescent glow in the sunlight. Freddo had beautiful golden eyes and bright green skin. We were all very excited to meet the lovely soft Ring Tailed Possum who, although nocturnal, was happy to have a midnight snack of corn and be stroked by us all. Our penultimate animal was Lillian, a 7 year old saltwater croc, who watched us all with beautiful big eyes and made a funny noise in her throat. We finished with an introduction to Squawk, who had been living up to his name and making his presence known the whole time! He had an amazing wingspan and fabulous black feathers with a brilliant flash of red on the underside. We happily fed him some seeds, which he ate with gusto. All in all we had a very enjoyable afternoon getting to know the animals and asking questions of our knowledgeable keeper. Thanks so much to Get Wild and to our wonderful residents who made it all worthwhile!

Welcome to Our New Residents

Welcome to Ron, our newest resident! We have been blessed with three new residents moving in over the past couple of months (Deborah, Sonya and Ron), and we are so happy that they are all here. Ron moved to the Astra from Woolwich, and he loves his new environment. He and several of his family members have told us how delighted they are with his move here. They are impressed with his apartment, its spaciousness and location, its accessibility to services and transport, and with the communal environment in the building. Ron already loves to join in with all the social events that we put on, and it is an absolute pleasure to have him in our community. What a fabulous village we have, and what wonderful residents 😊

Pancake Afternoon Tea

It was a hot and steamy day when we gathered in the lounge for a pancake afternoon tea. Particularly in the kitchen, where Anna was cooking for an hour or two!! But what a lovely time we had, despite the humidity. Pancakes were enjoyed with all manner of toppings – lemon and sugar for the purists, jam or fruit for the more adventurous, and Nutella for those with a really sweet tooth. Anna over-catered a bit, so there were pancakes to take away for dinner and breakfast the next day! It was a great chance for residents to catch up over a snack, and many people stayed for a really good chat after. Gloria even brought a bottle of sparkling for those inclined to enjoy. Eva won the lucky door prize (a nice bottle of white wine), and everyone went away having had a lovely time. Our thanks go to everyone who helped to make this event a success.

Australia Day Dinner

About twenty of us gathered under the courtyard greenery, dispelling the Covid gloom with smiles and cheerful camaraderie. Anna had draped the lounge with Australiana for the occasion. Presiding over the barbeque, Kirsty breached the boundaries of the division of labour, confirming yet again women’s prowess at multi-skilling. Alison, sommelier extraordinaire, kept the spirits bubbling. And with Ron joining in the celebrations we even boasted gender diversity! Ron’s sisters, who had been staying with him, were impressed with the convivial, communal environment and have vowed to visit him frequently. Our thanks to Anna and the Residents Committee who organised the shopping and catering, and to BBARV for their generous contribution of the food. Our thanks also to residents who added their own contributions to the smorgasbord. All in all, a great night!

Starting the Year Well with Afternoon Tea

Our first special afternoon tea of the year went really well, especially given the situation with escalating case numbers since the new year. We had a low-key afternoon of tea/coffee and biscuits/pastries, and a good old fashioned chin wag. It was nice to catch up with friends and neighbours again after the busyness of Christmas and New Year celebrations. We welcomed Ron, joining us for the first time since he officially moved in early in the month, and it was lovely to have him with us. Thanks so much to everyone who came along to start the new year well at Bondi Beach Astra.

What Does the Astra Mean to the Bondi Community?

The Astra building has a long and rich history in Bondi. The original hotel built on the site was the very first building overlooking the southern end of Bondi Beach. In the mid-1920s this first hotel was demolished and rebuilt, and the new hotel built in its place is the magnificent building that we still see today, almost 100 years later. After a brief spell as the Hotel International, it was renamed the Astra.

Between 1937 to 1967 the Astra flourished with fine dining, live orchestral music and one of the largest bars in Sydney! It was famous for its Christmas dinners and meat pies. During World War II it was taken over by the government for the air force and later by the British wrens. Parts of the movie Summer of the Seventeenth Doll with Ernest Borgnine, John Mills, Angela Lansbury and Anne Baxter were filmed at the Astra in 1959.

In the late 60s and 70s the Astra gained a reputation as being a hard-partying rock n roll venue, and many of Australia’s best bands played here.

In response to a large number of local complaints about the noise, drugs and violence at the Astra, in 1984 the building was converted into a retirement village. These days, Bondi Beach Astra Retirement Village hosts a thriving community of over-55 year olds who love to take advantage of its fabulous location and vibrant history.

We get lots of comments from Bondi locals on our Facebook page about their memories of the Astra. Here are some of the things this beautiful building means to them:

  • John Newton - “Aaah the Astra, great pies after surfing. And there was a very good Italian restaurant there… Did a terrific fish soup.”

  • Ellie Engelen - “Lived next door to the Astra, 1940s, played near there. Wedding night at Astra! 1950s! Good to see this grand building still in use today.”

  • Judy Curtis - “My first job in Sydney was barmaid at the Bikini Bar at the Astra!”

  • Tracey Scheitel - “My father was head waiter on the top floor when the Astra was a fancy restaurant/hotel back in the 60s.”

  • Sondra Williams - “Omg. My family ran the Astra as a hotel.”

  • Helen Sindicich - “We had our wedding reception there in 1980 when it was the Astra hotel. Amazing view from there.”

  • Christian P Caruana - “I’m turning 57 this year, 43 years ago I saw the Angels play at the Astra.”

  • Ann Espinoza - “Can’t believe the last time I was at the Astra in Bondi was to see Eric Burdon and the Animals, best night, house of the rising sun!”

  • Brett Martin - “And those just coming of retirement age will remember the Astra as a rocking live venue that once hosted AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors, Flowers and The Radiators. Apparently it was a bloodbath, but Aussie rock personified.”

  • Joe Bondin - “Wow this place used to rock with some of the biggest bands in Australia playing here! How poetic! Now a retirement home for old rockers.”

If you are interested in finding out more about the Astra in its latest incarnation as a retirement village, please give us a call, email or visit our FAQs. We’d love to hear from you.

Christmas Afternoon Tea

Our final afternoon tea of the year went wonderfully well, with many residents and friends attending and the sun shining in from the courtyard to give us all a lift. We caught up with friends over a glass of bubbly, and a sweet treat. There were mince pies and handmade cupcakes and gingerbread men for everyone to enjoy. We also had a special Secret Santa, with those that came bringing down a gift and going away with an equally exciting one! As always, it was so lovely to see everyone having a good time, and we look forward to many more events (without the disruptions of this year we hope) in the new year… 🎄🎁💖

Christmas Party 2021

It was a warm early summer day at Bondi Beach when we got dressed up for our annual Christmas party and gathered in the lounge for a celebratory drink. And boy did we need it, after all that's happened this year!

There was a definite festive spirit in the air as we went out to the Bondi Tratt (wonderfully located at the bottom of the building, just out the front door and turn right…) for our dinner of turkey and ham and all the trimmings. Alasdair, Joe and the whole fabulous team did a great job as always – the food was delicious, the atmosphere convivial, the wine flowing – and the whole experience was a credit to the persistence and patience of their team during this year’s lockdowns. Thanks guys 👏🍷

Suitably full, we returned to the lounge to the dulcet tones of John Campbell and Lorraine Delaney, our beautiful singers/musicians for the night. We had a full range of musical accompaniment, from Christmas tunes to country classics, to rock n' roll greats. After a brief interlude for speeches and the drawing of the lucky door prizes, some of us took to the dance floor, while others stayed chatting and having drinks and desserts. It was a truly joyful occasion after so much frustration this year - such a lovely time to spend with friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Thanks to everyone who came to take part in the event, and to those who had a hand in organising it. Special thanks go to John and Lorraine for staying with us to the end and providing a wonderfully celebratory atmosphere 🎸🎤 And to Sam and the folks at our local chemist for providing the great selection of lucky door prizes. All in all, a fantastic send off into the hectic whirlwind of the season, and one that will be remembered by everyone who came. Cheers! 🥳🥂🍾😊

Wine and Cheese Tasting

It was fabulous to be able to welcome Goran from Regional Wines of the World to Bondi Beach Astra for a wine and cheese tasting afternoon last week. As with many other things this year, we had planned to hold this event a few months ago and had to postpone because of the lockdown. But it was worth waiting for! A select and cheerful group of us gathered in the lounge to enjoy Goran’s whites, reds, rosés and liqueurs, and our cheese and biscuits to compliment. We were taken on a journey from Germany and Italy to Argentina and South Africa, discovering new grape varieties and old favourites on the way. It was a lovely selection, and big thanks go to Goran for his time, knowledge, and friendly and engaging delivery. We all enjoyed ourselves very much and relished the opportunity to have a natter and a laugh along with the excellent wine and cheese. More of this to come in the new year; next up…Christmas!
